Nobody in Albany likes the Highlanders. So imagine how the Cougars felt to lose their bid at an undefeated volleyball season to Piedmont on October 15. Although the players offered no excuse for losing, they did explain that the game was frustrating and boring.
The head referee during the game kicked out seven of Albany’s fans for apparent unsportsmanlike conduct. Principal Ted Barone did not see what was unsportsmanlike and asked for an explanation. Barone has asked the BSAL for a clarification of what is unsportsmanlike.
The players recognize the ref as the one who always “poking our buttons” and giving them “unnecessary kicks” because Albany is an emotional team.
The game itself was a thriller. Albany lost in four games, none of which were decided by more than 5 points. Two of the four games went over 25 points, a sign of how close the match was. Each point was closely contested and the competition was filled with mesmerizing plays and intense rallies. The Cougars played well but the result wasn’t ideal.
The players were disappointed but the loss only reinforced their desire to win the rest of their games.
Senior Emma Jackson promised, “For the rest of the season we will play with stronger attitude and more effort. If we see Piedmont in the BSAL finals, we’ll be sure to beat them down.”
As a result of the defeat, the Cougar’s record is now 13-1, still first place in BSAL.
The Cougars play rival St. Mary’s on Wednesday October 21, and wrap up the BSAL regular season next week with St. Patrick – St. Vincent at home on Tuesday October 27 and away against Encinal on Thursday October 29.
