Injury has plagued the Albany High School varsity football team’s season. Four starters are sitting the bench, two with serious injuries and two with minor. With these setbacks, the Cougars are struggling to gather a solid and healthy team that can consistently win games.
Miyashiro was the Cougar’s starting inside linebacker and left guard before another player fell on his wrist during practice and broke it.
The Cougars are crushed to see Miyashiro out for the next three weeks. Although it was only his first year on varsity, Miyashiro showed passion and determination, and was expected to be one of the varsity team’s key players.
Senior quarterback and team captain Robert Crowley said that Miyashiro was an essential part of the Cougar’s defensive plan and admitted that “it is going to be hard to find someone to fill his shoes.”
Before his injury, Miyashiro had high hopes for his performance this season. He said he had “gotten stronger and smarter as a football player” since last year and was “motivated and ready to play”.
Miyashiro also had high expectations for the varsity football team before it was overwhelmed with injuries. He claims that the varsity team wasn’t as “cocky as last year” and that their “strong defense and passing game” would help them rack up the wins this season.
Even with four injured starters, the Cougars still have faith and confidence in their abilities as a team. As for Miyashiro, his injury has definitely obstructed his performance this season, but he plans to condition with the team, as well as “run and weight train” on his own as soon as his wrist is fully healed.
Quinn hopes his hard work and dedication in the off-season will help him come back even stronger next season and give him the opportunity to play football at his dream college, the University of Hawaii. If Miyashiro stays determined and continues giving his all on and off the field, there is no stopping this promising young athlete from achieving his dreams.
