The Albany High School girl’s golf team has been a solid and consistent representative for Albany athletics. Having been undefeated in league in the last two years, the team approaches this season with optimism, determination, and an understanding of the hard work that is ahead.
Kiyomi Doty, a senior, remarked: “We’re going to step up our game this year and show people that the girl’s golf team is a force to be reckoned with!”
This year, the Albany girl’s golf team is filled with fresh faces. Tserina Dorjee, has stepped in as the new coach for the team, and so far has done an excellent in being a supportive mentor for the girls. “My goal for the team is to first make sure these girls are having a fun time,” Dorjee said.
As for more technical goals, Dorjee hopes to improve each player’s form and stroke along with making sure that all the girls maintain their grades.
In the beginning of the year, there was a fear that the team would be cut because of the lack of players. However, five freshmen that are eager to participate and learn more about the game have joined the team.
Accordingly, Coach Dorjee has designed a mentor golfing system in which seniors are paired with freshmen. “In this way, freshmen will learn faster and with more efficiency when having a more experienced mentor to emulate,” explained Dorjee. Coach Dorjee also urges interested girls to join the golf team in the next upcoming school year.
With all the determination and enthusiasm that the girl’s golf team possesses, the forthcoming season is sure to be successful one. As Dorjee puts it: “Golf teaches life lessons; that of patience, work ethnic, commitment, and integrity.”
The first match the girls competed in was against St.Mary’s and the team lost by 9 strokes. In the second match, against St. Joes, the team lost by only 3 strokes. Evidently, the team seems to be only improving their game as the season goes on. Be sure to watch the girls in their game against Hercules on September 21st and again the following Thursday, against St.Patricks.
