Spiderman 3 is good peanut gallery fodder

Spiderman 3 movie posterOn Saturday, I went to see the new blockbuster Spiderman 3. I was expecting it to be a bad movie after all of the terrible reviews it had gotten the day before. However, I decided it was necessary that I see the film because of how well it was doing at the box office.

The night ended up being really entertaining. Not because of what the movie was trying to do, but because I went to see the film with a couple of my friends who made sarcastic comments with me throughout the entire piece. Although we had a good time making fun of it, I was still a little disappointed that some bad screenwriting ruined the Spiderman series.

First off, the plot was completely random. Watching the movie was like watching three different movies all thrown together. There were a lot of holes and unexplained occurrences, such as the dark, evil side of Spiderman. The only reason he turns evil and acts vengeful is because a meteorite carrying an alien life form happens to crash next to him and crawl onto his suit. The Sandman character is created when an escaped convict stumbles onto a radioactive sand experiment. He comes across this experiment, however, by hopping a fence in the middle of nowhere while on the run from the law. The scene doesn’t make sense, and Sandman could have easily been completely cut from the movie and it wouldn’t have made a difference. The only villain who really makes sense and fits in with the plot is the Green Goblin’s son who wants to avenge his father.

My friend and I felt bad for Toby McGuire when he becomes the dark Spiderman, and is acting evil in everyday life as well. For some reason, director Sam Raimi decided to give Peter Parker an emo hair cut and black eyeliner. There is literally an entire five-minute sequence of him strutting down the sidewalk to some cheesy 70’s beat while snapping his fingers at attractive women and making pelvic thrust motions. No, I’m not kidding; they actually put this in the movie thinking that it would do it some good. It didn’t.

The special effects were all right, but they weren’t anything new. I could tell that the actors could have done better if they had a better script to work with and a plot that made sense. If you want a good laugh, go see this movie with an open mind. If you want to cry, go see it expecting a nice follow up to the first two movies. This is not a good movie, but I think that I got my money’s worth because I had so much fun insulting the movie with my friends.
