Sophie Chuang, the new Mandarin teacher, has made it her new goal to expand the Mandarin program. She said, “It’s not hard… the language is similar to English and it opens new opportunities.”
Chuang is originally from Taiwan, coming America to study. She began her collegiate career at University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign. There she obtained a degree in computer science, the career she planned to follow.
However, after having kids, she moved out to California where she received her teaching degree. From time to time she still goes back to Taiwan to visit.
After coming to California and getting her teaching credential, she stepped right into the classroom. Her first teaching job was at East Bay Chinese School in Oakland. Then she took her talents to Tamalpais High. Finally, she ended up with us at Albany High.
Chuang is part of a large extended family at Albany High. Two nieces have graduated, four students including her daughter, Allison, are here and four more are on the way.
In what little spare time she has, Chuang, enjoys movies and reading. Outdoors, Chuang spends her time in an organic vegetable garden and plays tennis.
On Saturdays, Chuang continues her teaching at a Chinese school.
Thus far enjoyed her time here: “The students are wonderful, focused, fun and responsible.”
