For previous coverage of this game, see this story.
According to NCS rules, when a game is called on the account of darkness, the score reverts back to the previous completed inning. Therefore, our Albany Cougars had earned a 7-4 victory. However, because the Matadors of Miramonte had evened the score right before the game was called, the Cougars were forced to return to Moraga to complete the game.
With the bases empty and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the game recommenced with a 1-1 count. A stellar pitching performance by senior Kyle Shipley held the Mats hitless through 3 1/3 innings on that day. Shipley had also thrown 3 2/3 in the original game. In the 9th inning, Miramonte nearly won the game when they loaded the bases with one out and their clean-up hitter at the plate with a favorable 3-1 count. However, the batter popped out to third baseman Derek Uchiumi. The following hitter was retired in quick succession.
Sophomore Ellis Stephney came into pitch in the 11th inning after an injury to Shipley’s leg forced him to make an early exit. Stephney shut down the Mats, and in the 12th inning, a walk issued to Uchiumi put the eventual winning run on first base. After a successful bunt by senior Jake Phillips, Uchiumi scored on a single to center field by junior Nana Yiadom.
The Cougars now hold a record of 3-0 after defeating Acalanes High School of Lafayette 8-0 and Las Lomas High School of Walnut Creek 4-3.

Interesting that in the sports section of the Cougar out of the 12 articles listed only one is about women’s teams.
stop whining
Title IX is about funding and participation, not coverage. The jist of it is: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” The reason that only 1/12 articles is about womens’ teams is because, frankly, people, on average, care less about women’s teams. The Chicago Sky had 3700 people coming to their games on average in 2007, the Chicago Bulls, with an equivalent winning percentage, have about 21,000 people attending on average. Due to the fact that men do have more muscle mass and fast-twitch muscles on average, and the fact that sports are, right now, more prominent in male culture, men, on average, play better than their female counterparts do at sports. Of course there will always be exceptions, but when a 33 year-old Karsten Braasch, who was ranked #203 among men, could dominate Serena and Venus Williams when they were in their primes, it suggests that women’s sports has a little ways to go before it can be considered close enough to men’s sports that it would warrant equal media coverage.
That the follow up comments were removed. Yet this obvious piece of sexist, misogynist, piece of “writing” is allowed to stay up. “Mac Zilber” clearly does not understand that a high school newspaper is supposed to serve the entire student body, not just the male, heterosexuals.
