Lady Cougars stumble in League Championship

Junior Jana Poole spikes the Cougars past Salesian en route to the finalOn Saturday, November 11, the varsity volleyball team failed to win Albany’s first league championship since 2003. Albany had advanced to the final after defeating Salesian in three games on Thursday. Despite having home court advantage due to a first place finish in the regular season, the Cougars did not come away with the victory. Tarah Murrey led the Panthers with 23 kills in their successful attempt at revenge after a thrilling regular season loss in Albany.

The first game was close to the finish, with Albany winning 23-20 before a timeout. The Panthers then came back out and rattled off five straight points to win the first game.

The second game was back and forth, and again Albany squandered a lead. This time, it was 16-12 before St. Mary’s went on another run and sealed the deal, almost entirely deflating a rowdy student section of Albany fans hoping to push the team back to victory.

In the final game, Murrey absolutely took over, flashing the talent that has placed her as one of the top recruits in the Bay Area. The Panthers, led by setter Sarah Brajkovich, who had 31 assists, easily fed Murrey ball after ball. Murrey even managed to get a kill with her left hand.

Overall, some spotty defense on the side of the Cougars and an unstoppable Murrey led to their defeat. Despite the loss, the Cougars are still in the NCS tournament with a 4th seed. Their first game will be on Wednesday, November 15, against El Molino-Forestville at 7 p.m.
