Girls’ soccer blazin’ away

Sophomore Juliet Mariniello attempts to head in a goalAlbany’s overlooked winter sport is always girls’ varsity soccer. Our talented girls don’t receive their much-deserved attention. But these girls don’t let a lack of support faze them. The team has a 3-3-4 BSAL record. Their wins come from a major 8-0 victory over Kennedy, and a 7-1 blowout win over John Swett.

The team has tied Saint Joe’s 0 to 0 and Salesian 2 to 2. One of their losses came at Piedmont, who hasn’t lost to Albany since the 1970s. The team is made up of some fantastic players, some of whom are going places with the sport. Megan Moss, a senior, is one of the star forwards with 6 goals and 3 assists. Jackie Quinn, another key player, is the junior leader of the mid-fielders.

This year, girls’ varsity has been blessed with some exceptionally talented freshmen, including forward Amy Hershberger and midfielder Cristy Peterson. The varsity team’s only setback is the distinct lack of support from fellow students at Albany High.

Katye Anderson, the teams star defender, said, “There has definitely been a dramatic increase in fans since last year, but their still needs to be more support.”

The girls didn’t even get a vacation during winter break, and are continuing to work hard, both during practice and against many difficult opponents.

Our girls’ varsity soccer team needs fans screaming at refs for bad calls and criticizing rivals at all their home games. And why not go? Our girls are on fire.
