Freshman Claims Women’s Tennis BSAL

If you were told that freshmen April Ngo was Albany High School’s number one singles tennis player, judging by her size and unsuspecting demeanor, you might be skeptical.

But any doubt would be eliminated when you learn that Ngo won the BSAL tournament and is the reigning singles league champion.

Last year, it was no surprise when senior Elena Pan won the BSAL tournament for the second straight year. It was the one victory Albany enjoyed over its mortal rival, Piedmont. But after losing six seniors last year, including Pan, there were few prospects for Albany in the BSAL tournament.

So it was a rude surprise for the main contender — Piedmont senior Bianca Rosen — to lose the title to a freshman half her size.

After an outstanding first season, Ngo gave a valiant effort in the championships last Wednesday, beating Rosen 2-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Luckily for Albany, and to the dismay of Piedmont, we have Ngo for three more years. Ngo continues onto the NCS tournament this week.
