Cougars Smell Victory In the Evening

It was cold and rainy outside, but inside the gym, the Albany men’s and women’s basketball teams were on fire, playing two inspired games to kick off the NCS playoffs. Eight-seed Albany played host to both games Tuesday evening, with the men taking on the Kennedy-Fremont Titans and the women facing the San Marin Mustangs.

The men looked a little sluggish from the outset of the game, scoring just ten points in the first quarter, but they picked it up a notch and dominated on their way to a 73-58 win. They scored 22 and 24 points in the second and third quarters, respectively. Sophomore guard Justin Johnson led the way for the Cougars, scoring a game-high 28 points. Senior forward Connor Freeberg added 17, and junior guard Myles Babbitt hit two three-pointers.

The Lady Cougars did not have nearly as easy a time. In a thrilling back-and-forth game, Albany came back from nine points down in the final three minutes to win 44-39. Junior Shelby Delaney was everywhere, providing tight defensive pressure and hitting the final two free throws to ice the game. Junior Deanna Calhoun was a monster in the paint as usual, playing the entire game despite being exhausted.

Both teams play top-seeded Bishop O’Dowd in the next round of NCS play at home on Friday, February 26th, in the evening.
