Cougars’ season lifted by miracle [Video]

As the Albany High Boys Basketball team begins to wrap up its final pre-season games, it will always remember how it won a crucial game against San Rafael.

Coming into the game with a 3-4 record, the Cougars desperately needed a win to keep them in the race for North Coast Section Playoffs. The game started off slow, with the Cougars trailing by four at the half.

The game came down to the final possession. Up one, with one second remaining on the clock, all the San Rafael player at the free-throw line had to do was purposely miss the shot off the rim and the clock would expire. Everyone in the gym thought the game was over, including the Albany players who were hanging their heads.

What happened next truly proves the old adage “It ain’t over till it’s over.”

When the San Rafael player intentionally missed the shot, the ball landed right in front of Phil Peterson, who without a thought, grabbed the ball and flung it the full ninety-four feet of the court. All eyes were on the ball as it dropped perfectly through the Albany basket to give the Cougars a 44-43 victory.

Players stormed the court, their spirits soaring, along with the Cougar’s chances of making NCS playoffs as they advance to a record of 4-4.

The Cougars begin the Bay Shore Athletic League this Friday versus Kennedy.
