With the sour memory of their first game still fresh in their minds, the Albany High varsity football team was out to prove that they weren’t pushovers. They did that and then some in their first home game of the season. In front of a passionate and excited home crowd, the Cougars dominated the Mission San Jose Warriors in all facets of the game, winning 48-0. Said senior quarterback Andrew Spivey, “We came out knowing that we should dominate this team. The offense was clicking and the defense played fast and physical. It was a nice way to bounce back from our first game and go forward to next week with confidence.”
The Cougars played amazingly well on both sides of the ball. Spivey connected on a 70-yard bomb to senior receiver Levy Wilson for a touchdown in the first quarter, and a 20-yard strike to senior Alex Jones in the third quarter. Rushing the ball, the Cougars were just as unstoppable. Spivey had runs of 35 and 15 yards, and Wilson had a 25-yard dash for a touchdown. However, the Cougar defense was the story of the game, stopping the Warriors within ten yards of the end zone three times. Jones and senior linebacker Andrew Reggi also had interceptions.
As Spivey said, the Cougars can use this game as a boost to their confidence. Other teams now need to realize that they’re dealing with a legitimate threat. The junior varsity team also won.
The Cougars next home game is this Friday, September 25 against Bradshaw Christian School.
