Albany Cougar’s varsity football got bulldozed, 48-20, by Bradshaw Christian on Friday, September 25th. The Bradshaw Pride running backs combined for over 400 yards, tearing up the Cougar defense. With the devastating loss, the Cougars fall to 1-2 on the season.
Bradshaw Christian explored the running game early, and gained a convincing 21-0 in the first half. Just as all hope seemed lost for the Cougars, senior Jelani Moore provided light at the end of the tunnel. In the final minute before the break, Moore’s 75-yard kick return left the Cougars at the 1 yard line. On the next play, Andrew Spivey ran it in to put the Cougars on the board.
The Cougars kept the momentum going and closed the deficit to one touchdown when quarterback Andrew Spivey hit Avi Rosenblum for a 55-yard connection at the start of the second half.
After the Cougar’s threat to come back, Bradshaw Christian turned on the burners and showed no mercy. They finished off the game by scoring 17 more points, and shutting out the Cougar offense.
Cougar senior Nate Larabee said, “They [Bradshaw] wouldn’t pass the ball. They just ran us into the ground, and took advantage of our mistakes.” Bradshaw certainly revealed a weakness in the Cougar defense.
The projected success of the football program this year highlighted the potential to learn and improve. Coach Scott Shevelson will have to focus on defending the running game if the Cougars are to be a top team in the BSAL.
Albany’s next opponent is powerhouse Encinal. They will face the reigning BSAL champions at 4:00 P.M. on Friday, October 2.
