Cougar Volleyball Midseason Review

The Albany Cougar Volleyball Team (16-3, 9-0) has had the best possible start in league play. Currently, they sit atop the BSAL with a perfect 9-0 record and have confidence that they will follow through with an undefeated league season.

With Thursdays win over Encinal they have played every team in the BSAL at least once and have only had trouble with Salesian and St. Patrick/St. Vincent, who are just two games behind Albany for the league crown.

The only question that remains is how will the rest of the league season go?

“Really good,” replied Albany’s libero, junior Sita Wong. “We are still trying to go undefeated. That is our goal.”

Wong is one of the captains of the team, along with senior Emma Jackson. However, Emma and Sita are not the only people doing work. Albany’s team is lead by an outstanding group that tops the lists of BSAL stat leaders. Freshman Kyra Holt and senior Kelsey Karawanny are both in the top five in kills. sophomore McKenzie Giblin leads the league in assists. Giblin also shows up at second in the league in aces with her teammates senior Brianna Habu and Jackson. Senior Talei Tagivakatini and freshman Marin Gibson are second and third in league for blocks. Wong is second in the league in digs.

These amazing performances are what have lead the Cougar Volleyball team to an undefeated season thus far and should propel them to a fantastic finish as the season begins to wind down.

For the second half of the season the Cougars have circled two dates. On October 23, Salesian comes to Albany looking for revenge from their 3-2 loss against the Cougars and on October 27, the Cougars host St. Patrick/St. Vincent for the last big league game. Wins against both of those teams will most likely clinch the BSAL title. Until then, the Cougars look to keep up the pace and finish off the season undefeated.
