The highlight of the day is standing at break with your respective class, chanting your respective graduation year. The sounds and the repetitive rhythm ring in your ears in every class. Sitting in third period awaiting break, the ground shook with excited jitters. The bell finally rang, releasing us to exhibit our inner animalistic pride. While standing in a sea of color, the sounds of each class — fighting, screaming in raspy voices, chanting for the coveted bragging rights — drown each other out. Standing on the stairs with your class is a way to show your pride in the class, unity, and of course, who can scream the loudest.
Homecoming may be seen as a time when grades are pitted against one another, blindly hating each other, but what many fail to notice is the class unity it brings about. Screaming at the top of your lungs and throwing your body at the other classes, knowing there is a sea of your color behind you, screaming with you, is a feeling of belonging, of pride. This is most evident on color war day, when classmates, who might have been too shy to dress like a toddler, a grandparent, or a twin, are never too shy to wear their class color. Homecoming is about flaunting who you are, and standing up for what you’re a part of.
