Check-up on Albany Baseball

Seniors Graeme Agate throws a fearsome pitchThrough 14 games, the Albany High baseball team is 9-4-1. That includes a 5-2-league record. So far, some of the team leaders include Graeme Agate, Zach Babbitt and Kyle Shipley.
Agate leads the team in batting average, ERA and is second in RBI’s. Babbitt is tied for the team lead in home runs with Agate and leads the team in stolen bases. Shipley leads the team in RBI’S and has been solid on the mound.
One of the biggest surprises this year has been the success of freshman Ellis Stephney. Stephney, is second on the team in batting average as well as in ERA.
During Spring break, the Cougars participated in the annual Alhambra Easter tournament. Unfournetly, things did not turn out good for the Cougars. After winning their opener against Las Lomas, the cougars proceeded to drop the next two in a row.
There is still plenty of baseball left, with a few big games.  May fourth is a date many Cougars have circled on there calendars. That is there chance for revenge against cross-town rival St. Mary’s. Albany lost to St. Mary’s 9-4 back on March 23.  At press time, St. Mary’s is undefeated with a 15-0 record.
Another big game will be the final game of the year as Albany takes on Salesian at Cougar Field. Albany lost To Salesian in early April and this will be a pivotal game.
There’s no question the team could be playing better. Junior pitcher/outfielder Josh Spence said, “ When we play as a team we’re unbeatable, but right now we’re not coming together as a team.”
Last year’s team had a very similar record through this point in the season. They ended up going as far as the semi-finals in NCS. This year’s squad looks to go even farther.
