The Albany High Boys Varsity soccer team had no problem continuing its six game winning streak by defeating the Kennedy High School Eagles on Wednesday, Jan. 19. The Cougars started the game off strong, with junior Andre Alvarez scoring two early goals. His first goal was a beautiful right-footed strike from the right side of the 18-yard box.
Moments later, Alvarez put away his second goal of the game, a header off of a corner kick by sophomore Felix Gonzalez. To finish off the first half, senior Manuel Ramirez scored off of a direct kick, straight past the Kennedy goalkeeper.
Albany’s only fault came in the last 15 minutes of the game, when Kennedy managed to put a header in the back of the net. “It was a defensive mistake; we just didn’t clear ball,” explained junior Kian Ahmadi.
Despite this momentary lapse, the Cougars’ offense continued to overwhelm the Eagles’ defense, and Albany dominated the game. “Our midfield really stepped it up,” said Ahmadi.
After losing nine seniors from the 2009-2010 season, the Cougars have not let this become a setback, with their win against Kennedy giving them an overall record of 9-2-2 and a 6-1 record in the Bay Shore Athletic League.
What’s next for the Cougars? On Wednesday, Feb. 2, the Cougars will have a rematch against their league rival, the Saint Mary’s Panthers. The Panthers are the only team that have beaten the Cougars in the BSAL, so come out and show your Cougar Pride on Feb. 2 at 5:30 p.m. on Cougar Field!
