Boys Basketball: Cougars vs. Panthers

Saint Mary’s College Preparatory High School is commonly thought of as Albany High’s rival. The Albany and St. Mary’s basketball teams faced off in the Cougars’ gym on Jan. 19. Though St. Mary’s came out on top in this game, Albany did not go down easily.

The first shot of the game was a three-pointer from St. Mary’s. But Albany High senior Myles Babbitt quickly rebutted with another three-pointer. Unfortunately, by the second half, Albany was down by fourteen points. The final score was 48-30, St. Mary’s.

The Junior Varsity also lost to St. Mary’s.

At press time, the Varsity Cougars record is 2-3 in the Bay Shore Athletic League and 8-11 overall.

Though the varsity basketball team suffered from the loss of many key seniors to graduation, junior Sebastian LeFour confidently asserted that the Boys Basketball team will do well in North Coast Section this year.

Having qualified for NCS by winning enough NCS Division III games, the Cougars have the opportunity to improve their seeding with two more Division III games against Encinal on Jan. 21 and Kennedy on Senior Night, Feb. 09.

With seven of the ten varsity players graduating this year, Albany will face a severe deficit in talent next year. But LeFour focused on the present, and declared, “Every day we become more of a family.”
