One year ago, Proposition 8 passed, banning gay marriage in California. Many people across the state are supporting gay marriage today, November 6, by wearing black. The color black was chosen to symbolize the decease of same-sex marriage.
As one of the most liberal states in the country, California has been one of the only states to legalize gay marriage. The California Supreme Court ruled that gay marriage should be legal in June 2008, based on an equal protection argument. Proposition 8 subsequently banned same-sex marriage. The court further ruled that the marriage licenses that were given already given out would stand, and that further same-sex marriages would be subject to Proposition 8.
To many, the results of Proposition 8 were a surprise. A second reversal of the legislation of gay marriage would not be easy, and it would require a great rise in support and awareness. The movement today is just one demonstration that attempts to gain support against Prop 8. Supporters are trying to get another ballot initiative in the 2010 election in order to grant licenses to same-sex couples.
The S.F. Bay Area has a relatively large LGBT population and an accepting attitude. Many teachers and students have shown their support for gay rights today at Albany High School.
