Art Building Mural
If you frequent the art building, you may have noticed that there is a new mural in progress in the lobby. What started as brown triangles sparsely populating the wall has now metamorphosed into a lovely 1930’s theater-themed scene.
Rachel Erickson, a junior in Advanced Art, thinks “the mural is really coming together.” Having participated in its creation since its planning stages in mid-December, Erickson is excited to see the project come to fruition.
Painting the lobby of the art building began as a public arts initiative by Sarah Samonsky. Samonsky and Lisa Norman, an artist and art teacher, proposed the idea to students in Advanced Art and asked them to consider potential themes. The result was a collaborative decision to make the lobby into a classic theater-themed portrait of the 1930s. The mural was funded by grants from the school provided by principal Ted Barone.
“It’s a nice mix between the theater and art departments. And it gives style and class to the red-checker-floored theater lobby,” added Erickson.
The Advanced Art class has spent the last few weeks painting the mural, with students coming in after school, on weekends, and during advisories to put in extra time.
“Making the mural has been a really good experience, because the mural isn’t any one person’s piece of art. You have to make compromises with the other artists to come up with something that everyone will like,” commented Erickson. Erickson has come to paint during every advisory since the project began. The mural is expected to be fully completed this spring.
