In what appears to be a positive trend, the latest Board of Education meeting, held November 15, 2011, managed to once again end early. The short meeting included a presentation from Albany High student Nir Maoz and an update on the pool construction.
After the conclusion of regular Board business, Nir Maoz, Albany High student and member of the Community Media Access Committee, gave a short presentation about the activities of his committee. Among the highlights of the presentation were a short clip about the activities of the Community Media Access Committee and a word about the Albany Student Broadcasting group. Composed of Albany High students, the Albany Student Broadcasting group produces live broadcasts of high school sporting events (and in the future, will produce broadcasts of other community events). Past broadcasts are available at their website, www.albanystudentbroadcasting.com.
The other feature of the evening was an update on pool construction. The Albany Aquatics Center construction project, now set to be completed on December 23, 2011, is once again back on track following a delay in window delivery.
Construction manager Devin Kokotas, of Bollo Construction, assured the Board that construction would move rapidly until completion. “I don’t see an issue with installing [windows] in the rain, but obviously it’s up to the contractor,” said Kokotas. “They’ve also agreed to work weekends if necessary.”
It was noted, however, that the pools would still need to be filled and approved by the state for occupancy after the December 23rd completion date, making an opening to the public likely in January.
