On Thursday September 27th, the Albany high volleyball team traveled to North Berkeley to take on their rival, the St. Mary’s Panthers. At first things did not go well for the Cougars as they lost the first game, but then they turned things around and took the next three games. Albany won with a final score of 3 games to 1.
From the get go, St. Mary’s gym was packed with Albany fans who were louder then the St. Mary’s supporters. Cougar fans stayed loud the whole game and stormed the court after the victory.
For both teams, it was a battle of the new coaches. Albany head coach Sarah McClendon replaced Jeff Barnes and St. Mary’s is now led by Cassie Aschinger who replaced Jon Segall.
The victory for Albany was the third year in a row Albany won in the regular season against St. Mary’s. However Albany has struggled in the BSAL playoffs against St. Mary’s. St. Mary’s will have a shot at redemption October 24th when they play Albany on our home court.
Albany’s next game is Monday October 1st against Salesian – a team that also beat St. Mary’s. Salesian’s overall record is 14-1. This should be a key game for the BSAL standings.
