Albany Cougars beat out St. Joe’s 3-1

Senior Junna Murakawa throws out a runner after a dropped third strikeOn Friday, April 27, the Albany Cougars baseball team hosted the St. Joseph Notre Dame Pilots in an extremely competitive baseball game.

Led by ace Kyle Shipley on the mound, the Cougars were hoping to improve their league record to 7-2 and keep a firm hold of second place in the BSAL. The Pilots took the lead in the top of the first on a deep sacrifice fly.

The Cougars, even though they were putting the ball in play, were unable to put any runs on the board. Finally, in the bottom of the fifth inning, Zach Babbitt laced a two-run single to the right-center field gap, and advanced to third on an error by the center fielder. Babbitt eventually found his way home, and suddenly the Cougars were in great shape with a 3-1 lead. The Cougars held the score at 3-1 for the rest of the game.

Shipley pitched a complete game three hitter, picking up his team leading fifth win. He finished the day with 8 strikeouts, while lowering his ERA to 2.20.

On Wednesday, May 2, they play league foe Piedmont away and on May 4 they face rival St. Mary’s in a crucial game at Evans Diamond on the Cal campus. Come out and support the Cougars as they work their way towards a possible NCS berth.
