“New season of Friday night lights premieres this week!” exclaimed senior Brendan Ward, comparing tonight’s opening varsity football game at Cougar Field to the hit NBC show.
Friday’s game will likely provide clues to the balance of the season as the Cougars take on another pack of cougars from Campolindo High.
After losing several key players to graduation, the team has a revamped offense, starring 2009 BSAL All-league players Robert Crowley and Avi Rosenblum, a formidable defense featuring standout Jerry Gurule, and a young offensive line lead by senior Alex Stepans.
“Although we have big expectations, we’re keeping the focus on the team,” said senior Ben “Trey” Roberson, another offensive weapon at wide receiver for the Cougars.
Key games this year include opening night against Campolindo at the Cave, in which the Cougars will debut their option attack, Homecoming against Kennedy October 29, and November 6 at St. Mary’s, when the team hopes to avenge last year’s loss to their arch rivals.
As always, big expectations await the Cougars this season, but the players are keeping it in stride. “One Team. One Vision. One NCS Championship. 30 Strong,” said Rosenblum, enthusiaslically repeating the 2010 team motto.
